How to stay Motivated in times of … having a BABY!

Writer's picture: Fida SarjiFida Sarji

This might not be the most common headline to find for tips on studying and graduating but let’s face it, it is where I am at now, I am combining studies in the 4th semester for my master’s degree in Content Strategy at FH Joanneum and motherhood.

My planned pregnancy couldn’t come in a better time, while as a person I can’t stand sitting at home not doing anything now I have a lot on my hands, I must graduate, keep learning German while throwing motherhood into the mix. But the thing I am sure about is that I am motivated to finish my studies while holding my baby boy, finishing my master’s degree while fulfilling my motherhood responsibilities will be totally worth all the ups and downs for me.

To come to this point I definitely need a plan, new set of skills and a lot of organization, here are the main points that I think will help me fulfill my mother/student life for the next months.

1- Don’t Procrastinate

This advice you might see in almost every blog talking about better time management and organization skills. But here it is a life saving advice!

Don’t postpone work, assignments or presentations that can be done today or this hour for tomorrow or for the next hour, for the next thing you know the baby is awake and needs a lot of attention, care, feeding and a lot of kisses! So, all in all do your work while you can because you are not really sure what you will be doing the next hour.

2- Keep on track

You might not have the time to attend certain lectures or do your assignment in the most perfect way or spend time reading about interesting topics like you used to, but keep track, meaning know exactly what you have, when you have lectures your deadlines and everything related to your studies. This will help you keep a firm hand on your study life and feel you are still part of the studies and part of everything happening in the program. You don’t want to feel left out those times, it will be the cherry on the top!

3- Your partner/friends/colleagues are your best assets

This doesn’t need much explanation, supportive partner and people are very important, you can do this but having help will be beneficial, your partner holding the baby while you attend your zoom calls, friends who will let you know if you miss things and colleagues who will remind you of deadlines and give you the little gentle push you need to keep track and continue with high spirits.

4- Every progress is huge.

Don’t pretend everything is like before and you can do the same amount of work like you used to, be gentle on yourself you will get everything done its just that you need more time and focus to do it, after all your time is not in your hand anymore but you can squeeze some hours and finish the work. Also, with a limited time to finish work, some people become even more efficient and creative!

5- Don’t feel uncomfortable

Keeping your dream alive doesn’t make you less of a mother and being a mother doesn’t make you less of a student, forget the unconscious bias you have in your head and don’t listen to people who might put you down, listen to people who believe this is doable.

Keep ALL your goals alive!
