A lot of conversations are increasing nowadays about General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and how it affects all people from users, websites, social media accounts and social platforms. We at FH Joanneum at the content strategy master program had a very eye-opening discussion last week with Veronika Beimrohr about what GDPR means, its history and how we should know our rights and obligations. I got inspired into writing this blog post maybe I can help with some information or start another honest discussion about this important topic.
Relatively general data protection regulation topic is quite new, and the buzz about it happened few years ago when a lot of people started hearing about the social media platforms scandals (basically Facebook selling personal data for example).
The European Data Protection Regulation consists of 11 chapters that includes in total 99 articles, the regulations are applicable as of May 25th, 2018, in all member states in order to standardize data privacy laws in Europe. All related information can be found on their website https://gdpr-info.eu/
One of the first people to start noticing and talking about this is Maximilian Schrems, an Austrian activist who did a campaign against Facebook because of its privacy violation, personal data selling and the suspected transmission of personal data.
Facebook as a communication tool can have all our data and this data is being processed but we don’t know exactly what is happening to it, how it is being stored, where and how it is processed, it is said that they are keeping everything, every action we do stored, and we don’t have a clue what happens after that.
The seven principles governing the processing of personal data and set out in article 5 of the GDPR are:
- Lawfulness, fairness and transparency
- Purpose limitation
- Data minimization
- Accuracy
- Storage limitation
- Integrity and confidentiality
- Accountability.
Nowadays every website we enter request from us to consent to a lot of things without knowing exactly our rights, the most authentic website in Europe to know your GDPR rights and REGULATION (EU) 2016/679 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation) is: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32016R0679&qid=1648578564953
This topic is huge, I didn’t cover half of it, but I wanted to spark the interest about this important topic and at least some people think about it and search for it.
